Next Friends of Palestine meeting and time confirmations

As you may know, Amnesty International will be devoting Week 5 of this term as Palestine Solidarity Week. We will be working together to organise a number of events, and the society will be meeting next Wednesday, Week 4, to discuss what’s coming up the following week, and what exactly we’ll be planning. You’re all invited to come to the meeting, bring any ideas you may have, or simply come along to find out what will be happening. If anybody is interesting in helping organise the events, please let us know at the coming meeting.

For those of you who knew already about the meeting next Week, you are aware that we had planned it for 5pm. That may no longer be possible, and we may hold the meeting at 5pm. If you are interested in coming, and have a particular time preference (or if 3pm is really hard for you), please email us back in the society email (, and let us know.

We will be confirming a definite time and place in a few days. Hope to see you all there!

Best regards

Friends of Palestine Exec

Meeting this Wednesday

Hello everyone!

We’re having a meeting about Gaza for anyone interested in taking part in the convoy this winter.

In December, a large convoy of ambulances, filled with food and medicine will drive through Europe and the Middle East to break the Blockade on Gaza!
There is also another group of people who will be attending a Freedom March in the Gaza Strip on New Years day.

If you are interested in taking part please come to the meeting (This Wednesday, social studies building S0.13 5pm)

We also need people to help with fundraising, publicity/keeping the convoy in the media through the winter, and an emergency team in the UK to mobilise people if anything were to go wrong.

More information on how you can get involved will be given at the meeting.
Where we will have guest speaker : Fiona Edwards from the Viva Palestina Convoy (who went last year) to share her summer experiences and answer any questions.

Please forward this email on to anyone you think could be interested in helping.

See you Wednesday!

Society meeting and elections

Hi everybody,

We hope you’ve enoyed the first week of the term and the societies fair on Wednesday and Thursday! For those of you that couldn’t make it on the first meeting last thursday, don’t worry, as we’ll be having another one at the end of this week, and many more events through the year.
We wanted to make sure you know that there are elections for the exec of the society at the end of this week, if you are interested in becoming more involved in the society and would like to take a position in the exec. There are currently 5 exec positions and we’ll be having elections for all of them. These include:
– President
– Treasurer
– Secretary
– Publicity Officer
– Social Sec
As we’ve mentioned to the people who we met in our thursday meeting, the elections do not mean that the current exec is going to be throwing the society to whomever wants to run for the positions, and then let you on your own to run things. Some of us will be running again for positions, and most of us will still be involved in the society regardless of whether we do so through an exec position or as simple members. I personally know that it can sometimes seem a scary prospect to attempt to run for a society exec, especially if one’s never been in such a position before, or if its their first year. However, there is really nothing to worry about, we’d like everybody who wants to be involved to try it, and the old exec, whether through new positions or as simple members, will be guiding you and advising you on anything you may want to know. This is a great opportunity to get more involved with the issue if you are interested about it, and a great opportunity to get more involved with the student union in the university as well.
If you are interested in running for the exec, please reply tothe society atĀ  by thursday morning. We will be emailing you very soon to tell you exactly where we will be meeting this week and where the elections will be held.

In Solidarity

Welcome to a new academic year!

It has been some time since we last updated the blog, but we wanted to take the chance of the start of the new acedemic year to welcome all the new members who’ve just signed up for the society! We hope that you all have a great year, and we hope that we will get to see and meet all of you at our various events! Also wanted to remind everybody that there will be a a first meeting of the society tomorrow (Thursday, 8th, Week 1) at 18:00 at union north (that is the floor above costcutters as soon as you go up through the union doors, next to xananas, pass through the union doors once you go up and you should find us on one of the rooms to the right, we’ll be there at the door so you can’t miss us). Hope to see you all there!
